While this article raises many interesting points, it fails to highlight that many Irish were brought to Australia against their will by the invading English in the 1800’s as political and economic convicts. They were not all free settlers.
However, this article does identify that history is messy and not homogeneous. Referring to ‘…collisions and its collusions…’ reminds us that there is no clear story. The best we can do is question the history we have been given, and try to discern the truth as best we can.
The colonialisation of cultures was an art that England learned long before Australia, and they learned it from the peoples who invaded and colonised them. A long traumatised culture, which knows that to truly dominate a people, their history needs to be rewritten. And they need to agree to it, be invested in the version presented.
